Jammu, Feb 22: Ruling National Conference Wednesday nominated its MLC Mohammad Yousuf Taing for the post of Deputy Chairman Legislative Council. The elections for the posts of Chairman and Deputy Chairman would be held on February 24.
Coalition partner of the NC, Congress has already nominated its candidates Amrit Malhotra for the Chairman’s post. The Council has 27 members at present.
Taing’s nomination was announced by Dr Farooq Abdullah during the NC Legislature Party meeting in Jammu and later Chief Minister Omar Abdullah confirmed it in Civil Secretariat.
Taing also confirmed that he has been nominated. “I have 11 years of experience as MLC and I will try my best to run the house in accordance with the constitution,” he said.
“I am hopeful all the members will cooperate with me in running the business of the house smoothly,” he added.
Taing thanked the party for his nomination.
Meanwhile, sources said that the Chief Minister has called a joint meeting of NC and Congress at his residence later this evening.
“Agriculture Minister Ghulam Hassan Mir, PDF chairman, Hakim Yasin, and CPI-M state secretary M Y Tarigami have also been invited in the meeting,” they added.
Sources said the two parties will make a joint strategy for the ensuing Budget session in the meeting.
“The CM will brief MLAs and ministers of both the parties in the dinner meeting,” sources said.
